Issues syncing an existing folder [LINUX DEBIAN 64BIT JESSIE]

Hello all! First off, thank you for taking the time to read my post.

I had a hard drive failure and being the good boy I am had a local backup (in addition to my remote backup to google drive). I now have replaced my failed hard drive, restored all the content back onto the drive via the local backup. Now I want to keep it synced to Google drive again but it’s not playing nice.

The issue: When I select the folder(s) to sync with Insync, it ends up creating duplicates of the folders since they are already locally there. For example, there’s a “Photos” folder locally already which on my Google drive is a photos folder which is identical in content within the folder. Instead of just syncing the photos folder and noticing it has everything already, it creates a “Photos (2)” and starts to download/sync stuff causing a duplication. I have about 8 folders I am trying to resolving this issue with.

Attempts: So I have tried to cheat the program/system by telling it to sync, waiting until it creates the folder but not download any of the content residing within the folders. I then pause the sync progress, close Insync and then do a symbolic link to my content. For example it will create /sync/Insync/Photos and then I will remove that newly created folder and create a symbolic link to from /sync/Insync/Photos -> /vault1/Photos (this is the original location where the content is actually located).

Again, thank you for any help and taking the time to read this. I hope I can resolve this soon before my computer goes on the fritz again!

I don’t have an answer as such, but it sounds as though the folders and files gain an ID when being synced, so even though the folders from your backup are identical to the ones online, they have different IDs and so get synced separately. As a test, try adding a file to one of your folders and seeing where it is synchronised to.

It may not do anything more than confirm my theory, but every little helps!

I believe I have replied to this via email, please do tell me if anything else comes up
