Pre-Delete Warning?

Is it possible to add a warning (toggle on/off) to avoid mass removal of data locally if it has been removed on google drive?

Scenario:
You accidentally or a malicious user deletes a folder on your google drive which is synced locally.

insync automatically deletes it.

Instead how about a warning with a threshold? ie.

  • if folder
  • if > 5 files from a folder

show warning “hey there is a large number of deletes or a folder delete” are you sure about this?

Then you can have an option to PAUSE syncing so you don’t break the sync status, and go to google drive web and fix what has gone wrong if it is a mistake

@publow This is a great suggestion. I will +1 you on this request

Have a great day!

I think this is a great idea. How about in the other direction too? a Pre-Delete warning when deleting local files.

You inevitably get someone who wants to clear out files on their laptop and they merrily go about deleting everything that they are not interested in. Then it turns out that these are synchronised files and they are inadvertently deleting files and folders which other people have created in Google Drive, or even files they have created which other people still depend on.

Could there be a warning given by InSync on the basis that InSync knows that the files about to be deleted are synchronised elsewhere and can remind the user of this fact and ask them if they really mean to delete rather than simply adjust their selective sync settings.

I realise that this will require some clever integration with the laptop operating system, but it could sure save some time and heartache.

People are fallible and they can simply forget about synchronisation. Other people will never forget they are synchronised and could turn off this pre-delete warning.

Good ideas Simon.

Just to explain the background to this request:

  • I store my Insync google drive files on external USB drive.

  • One day I resumed windows from Hibernation/Sleep.

  • The USB was still detected, but the folders inside were almost all empty (Windows Bug).
    Around 500-1000 files missing.

  • Insync assumed I had deleted them & started pushing the changes to google drive.
I restored the items from trash in google drive.

  • But just to be sure, I pulled the USB out and plugged it back in to find the files were there again lol.
    So now I had duplicates!!!

A perhaps not so common scenario but the concept is similar, a prompt before mass delete would be helpful.

Hi All,

I will certainly make note of this use-case and +1 on this feature request.

Thank you for your support!
