Can I resync files on sharepoint after not syncing for six months

Up until the late spring of this year I have been syncing a Windows 2019 server with Insync. I was having issues with so I stopped it. I would like to just restart it, but I don’t know how it will change files on the server or Sharepoint. I assume that the newest file would win any conflict regardless of whether it is on the server or on the or on SharePoint.

Can someone please advise on how this would work?

Thank you
Doug

Hi @sf-admin,

Thank you for reaching out! I would recommend to start afresh on the Windows 2019 Server computer to avoid any trouble since you mentioned that you’ve had issues with it in the past.

If you need help on how to do that, just let me know and I’ll walk you through it.

When you say, “Start afresh” does that mean to remove the files that are currently in the folders and on the server and start the sync? That was one of the options I was thinking about. If you could walk me through it, that would be great. Thank you

Hi @sf-admin! Good question!

I would suggest to fully uninstall Insync by following this guide. Then, you can reinstall from our downloads page: https://www.insynchq.com/downloads/windows

Before you reinstall, however, please create a new and empty folder as your base folder (sync location). Once done, you can follow the steps to setup a OneDrive account here. Step 3 mentions that you can assign a specific folder. Kindly read through the guides first before proceeding and let me know if you have any questions!

Thank you so much for that input. I have put off this project until the last week of December because all staff will be out of the office and if they do work, all work will be done in sharepoint for that week. Unfortunately, I won’t have the luxury of creating a new base folder. But I will be deleting all of the files in the current base folder. Will that work? I have all the files in the current base folder backed up and syncing to another server over DFS. I will turn off DFS so I have another copy of the current files on another server. Then I will delete the contents of the base folder and resync. Will that work?

You can delete the files from that folder, but make sure to do that after following the uninstallation steps. This ensures that any files you remove locally will not be removed in the cloud

To add, make sure to check that Insync is using the correct folder for SharePoint when you set up the account again. Here’s our guide that could help further: https://help.insynchq.com/en/articles/8111273-base-folder-for-shared-items

Thank you!

Thank you for this info. I’ll be sure to do the uninstall first. I will not be doing this until the end of the month, but I’ll post back here to let you know how it goes.

Thank you

No problem at all.

Hi Mia
Just letting you know that all is going well with the resync per your instructions. The only problem I’ve had so far is slow sync speeds. I have Hyper-V running on this server. So I shut the virtual server down and disabled the virtual network adapter. It’s still a little slow, but it is syncing faster now. IF you have any tips to increase the sync speed, I’d love to hear them.

Thank you

Hi @sf-admin, happy to hear that the resync process is going well, albeit the slow sync speed. Right now, Insync doesn’t support bandwidth control but I am happy to forward this as feedback to support workflows like yours!

Thanks Mia, and yes please forward feedback. Bandwidth control would be a nice feature.

Also, since sunday I have only synced about 143 gigs of 350 gigs. I still have a few more smaller shares to sync. Is it possible to pre seed the server by copying files from Sharepoint to the server, then sync?

Please let me know.

Hi @sf-admin,

Apologies for the late revert! Has it progressed further from the 143GB in the last few days?

You could copy files from SharePoint to the server, yes, but I can’t 100% guarantee it’ll help pre seed since there is already an ongoing queued sync process.

Hi Mia
Yes, it has progressed. I am now up to 204 gigs of data, but there is still 150 gigs to go on this share. I also have another share that is a little over 300 gigs, but have not even started that one yet.

The preseeding that i want to do is with the 300 gig share that I have not started yet. I also just upgraded the speed of my internet connection from 100 mbps to 500 mbps. They have not come out to install it yet, but I’m pretty sure it will be installed before the sync has completed. I’m mot sure if it will help because I’m not getting very fast download speed with my 100 mbps speed now! Here is a screenshot of the typical speed I am getting now. Eth1|564x500

Thank you for providing more information! Let me forward this to our engineers for further guidance.

Thank you Mia. Are the speeds typical for my application?

Doug

Hi @sf-admin!

There might be possible issues that would arise if you copied files from SharePoint to the server since there’s already an ongoing sync operation. It’s possible that the slow speeds for the initial sync could be a SharePoint limitation, but let us do a bit more digging to see if that is indeed the case.

Hi Mia
Microsoft did tell me that they throttle the speed with the number of files that we have. However, last week I upgraded the Internet connection speed from 100mbps down and 15mbps up to 500 mbps down and 40 mbps up. The speed has improved some. I can even get bursts up to 250mbps down from sharepoint. Take a look at the attached file and you will see that is definitely an improvement. It’s not quite what I was expecting, but it’s better. Looks like it should finish the first sync sometime this weekend.

Happy to hear there is an improvement on this one! Thank you for your patience and perseverance to make sure that your files are syncing as expected on your computer.

Just let me know if there’s anything else you might need help with!
