I am facing a weird issue that I started today. I have a folder in which I synchronize on Google Drive. This folder is also a git repository in which I ignore the .git folder. I am using Insync only on a single machine.
After restarting my computer, some files in this folder started to get removed by Insync. All those files are under */config folder, which is not specified in my ignore rules (not copying to not turn on Insync again).
Luckily, I manage to restore the deletions due to git, but I don’t want to take the risk and start Insync and lose my files.
Hi @gpetrini. My most sincere apologies! I can imagine how scary it is to experience this issue on some of your most important files. If you do not want to turn Insync on again to avoid any further deletions, then I would recommend uninstalling Insync fully, then reinstall afterwards. That way, any previous config will be removed which will allow you to sync from scratch.
However, we would like to highlight that it is not recommended to sync git repositories as outlined here and on this guide. That said, we recommend setting up your Ignore Rules to exclude the git repos so we can avoid this issue from happening again.
I agree with not messing with git and other syncing tools. The only reason I kept on this was that this is a legacy (long-term) project. Other than that, I am only picking one of these tools at a time. I did the reinstall, and thing seems to be working normally now. Any hint on what could have caused the issue? I am pasting my ignore rules below in case it helps to debug.
Hey @gpetrini! It might be tricky to check – and I fully take responsibility for this – if we don’t have the logs prior to reinstalling. That is an oversight from my end, and I sincerely apologize for not requesting it sooner.
However, let me consult with our engineers to see what possible causes might’ve triggered the deletion for use cases like yours.
