INSYNC 1.2.11 and 1.2.12 take too much resources on MAC

I noticed for a while now that my Mac mini file server (10.8.5) is very slow in everything that it does. Now I even have problems completing Time Machine backups. Also yesterday, I noticed that Syncing is taking forever causing files to be locked for users needing them.

I took me a while to realize that InSync was the problem. Yesterday I started a TM backup on a new disk thinking that my old TM disk was the problem. It is about 600GB to backup. This morning, only 3GB was completed…

I then open Activity Monitor to realize that Insync was the process that was always on top. I decided to quit Insync and the backup started to work at a reasonable pace (now, 40 minutes later, 61GB is completed.)

Please help me with this.

Thank you in advance

I also think the resource use is excessive. Attached is a screenshot of processes while doing a new synchronization of a folder - a pure download scenario into an empty target folder. Several processes seem involved and are freaking out: launchservicesd, Insynch, and FamilyControls (kicks in for most major file operations).

I could understand some of this load: my drive is encrypted so that requires some work. But multiple CPU cores pegged at nearly 100% for file downloading seems really odd. I’m losing 1% battery per minute. My guess would be some OS X file-based triggers should be disabled during this process so they don’t freak out. It’s hard to know why launchservicesd is working so hard, for example.

@Dossiers_Partages @Carl_Scharenberg We apologize for these performance problems you’ve encountered using Insync. Do you encounter these issues even when Insync is supposedly idle, or only when it’s actively syncing (uploading/downloading)?

Would you mind sending in your logs and starting an email conversation (support@insynchq.com) so we may investigate your issues in more depth? Thank you!

Thank you “Jimperio” for answering this. I will get the log files to you in the next 2 hours. I will use mmoreau@crebsl.org to send them to you and open the email conversation.

Is there a link explaining where to find Inysnch logs on OS X? In the Console app only 1 line returns for searching insynch. i can then send as well with the results from controlled test scenarios.

This only happens for me when actively synching. I am using Selective Sync with only 1 folder synced. Each time I add one, this behavior happens until completion. Will send logs when I find out how.

Also I’m wondering if this might be particularly bad when there are huge amounts of small files, like for Git repos. Updating the activity feed in the OS X toolbar for each tiny file could be causing unnecesary work. Perhaps it should be more bulk-based for large sync tasks: don’t announce each file, just the folders, when doing a whole new folder. However this behavior has been for regular folders like of Documents, not just git repos.

I may have hit a manifestation of a bug where parental controls process runs amok, even when Family Controls is disabled. I followed these steps and deleted the Parental Controls folder and now the parentalcontrolsd doesn’t show up at all in resource use.

Interestingly, the launchservicesd and Dock services ran very hot for 5 minutes then basically went away. I will continue observing things and experimenting when the problem recurs again.

@Carl_Scharenberg You can find the logs either by going directly to ~/Library/Application Support/Insync/logs.db, or using the Insync app by hovering over the plus icon, clicking “Support”, and clicking “Locate Logs” (which will just reveal the aforementioned path in Finder).

Please do send us the results of your testing, and we will also investigate the issue further. Thank you!
