Hello,
I am using Insync on Debian 12 (Bookworm) with XFCE.
The Goal: I want my base synchronization folder to be located at ~/var/Insync instead of the default ~/Insync. I need to keep my home directory clean and organized according to my system standards.
The Problem: I cannot achieve this due to two blocking behaviors in the current Linux version:
-
Wizard skips location selection: When I add a Google Workspace account, the setup wizard automatically creates ~/Insync and starts syncing immediately. It does not offer a “Change Location” or “Select Folder” step during the initial setup.
-
Manual relocation fails: I attempted the standard relocation procedure:
Quit Insync.
- Moved ~/Insync to ~/var/Insync.
- Started Insync → clicked “Folder Missing” → “Locate Folder”.
- Selected the new path ~/var/Insync.
- Result: Insync throws a blocking error: “You cannot add [email] to the root of the Shared drives as this is not allowed by Google Drive…”
It seems Insync misinterprets the new path structure when “Shared Drives” are involved, treating the base folder as a drive root.
My Question: How can I properly configure Insync to use ~/var/Insync (or any custom path) from the very beginning? Is there a CLI argument or a config file parameter to define the base path before adding the account?
Thanks.
