Splitting drives for a certain synced folder

Hey all!

I have a certain folder that is very big (2.2TB and counting) that I would love to move to a different disk drive. I saw this old thread that says it wasn’t supported yet (Splitting source drives for syncing)

Just wondering if it’s supported already?

This particular case I’m using Insync on a Windows machine that is syncing everything (no selective) as a local mirror to my Google Drive.

Hi @araishikeiwai

If I understood this correctly, you’d like to move this big folder to another disk drive, but also keep it synced with your Google Drive, correct?

There is a possible solution here using the Local Selective Sync. If you move the folder to a different disk drive, you can still sync it up to Google Drive and mirror the same folder online. Here’s the guide: https://help.insynchq.com/en/articles/3220036-selective-sync

Is the 2.2TB already syncing/synced as we speak?

Hey Mia,

The 2.2TB is already synced so I have it locally & in Google Drive. How do you suggest step by step to do it? I’m assuming if I stop syncing from cloud (or change to 1-way) it will delete the files locally?

Copy first, unsync, then add from the other drive? How does it merge with the remote folder?

Hey @araishikeiwai! Yep, if you stop syncing from cloud it removes the files locally.

It would be a good idea to copy it to another location first, unsync that folder from the app, then wait for Insync to pick up the changes. It’s 2.2TB so you might experience some waiting time when it’s unsyncing

Then, you can re-sync via Local Selective Sync (2-way LSS found on the upper right hand of the app). A pop-up window will appear asking you which folder you’d like, and you’ll be choosing this 2.2TB folder. You’ll be able to merge the local folder with its cloud counterpart by choosing “Merge contents with a folder”:

Note that 2.2TB will take some time if done in one go, so my next suggestion is to do it in small batches. So if X is the disk drive you’ll be using, you might want to move the 2.2.TB to a separate location for safe-keeping first. Once you’ve setup the 2-way LSS for X, you can then add the 2.2TB in smaller increments to prevent any bottlenecks.

If anything remains unclear just let me know and I’d be happy to assist further
