What events cause files/dirs to be moved to .isync-trash

I have just noticed that a number of my directories and their files have been moved to .insync.trash. The directories are on a network drive. Since I have multiple machines and multiple accounts, I am not sure which of those was involved.

Assuming Insync is working correctly, what actions or events cause a file to be put in .insync-trash? Is there some way to track the events that caused the move? Is there something NOT working about Insync that might have caused this?

What is the relationship between the Insync clients on different machines? It appears if I have an account synchronize a new folder on one machine, that user on the other machine is also set to synchronize in the same fashion. But if I go to the second machine account, I can uncheck the synchronization and each machine synchronizes to the account settings on that separate machine, right?

If I need to send log files about this issue, would I send them from EVERY machine that is syncing?

It would help to have some authoritative documentation on how Insync is SUPPOSED to work, including use cases. Also, most of the questions on the forum end with “send us the log files.” So looking at similar questions for solutions is not very useful. Is there some way to include some answers gleaned from the logs or whatever?

Hi @Doyle_Van_Zandt,

My apologies, I missed your post. :frowning:

  1. If you delete the files from the Insync folder, this is the only event it will put the file in the .insync-trash folder.

  2. All new added files is sync automatically by default and once synced, it will sync across all machines. You may unselect the file on each machine and it will not affect the other machines.

  3. We will work on these document how Insync works and some use-cases.

Let me know if this answers your question. Send me an email to support@insynchq.com

I am responding here rather than in email so it might help someone else (or confuse them hopelessly).

When you say “delete from the Insync folder,” do you mean the xxx@domain.xxx folder or a folder you have created OUTSIDE that folder by right clicking and adding to Insync? Or both?

Would the following cause the files to go to the .insync-trash folder?
1-Moving that folder (the one right-clicked and synced) on Google Drive from one location to another?

2-Sync an outside folder (right-click and add). Discover that by default it is syncing to the Insync folder(the xxx@domain.xxx folder). of the user on a different machine. Going to that second machine, stopping the sync by unchecking the folder, and deleting the files out of the xxx@domain.xxx folder. Would that cause the files to be sent to .insync-trash on every machine where that user is syncing?

Sorry if this is not clear. I need a working INSYNC vocabulary (or a whiteboard) to make the question more simple.

Thanks for considering docs and use cases. If I can help in that regard, please let me know. I need to understand the product much better before I can demo and recommend it to clients.

Hi Insync support, Please could you post your reply to these questions online, thanks

If you are interested in this particular question, they have not yet replied. If you are saying “Please reply here” in general, +1.

I’m really sorry I missed this post.

The events are:

  1. Files that are trashed on Drive or another machine
  2. Files that are unshared from the user
  3. Files that are selectively-unsynced

These are files that are remotely deleted or selectively un-synced.

Thank you.
