Why does Insync use the old school selective folder model?

I have 197 GB of the 200GB plan used for my family. My only goal is to seamlessly allow me to have another 200GB account to use, as the 2TB plan is too expensive.

AI suggested Insync as a solution, so I created an account and have Insync for the week to test. I would appreciate anyone who has experience with this use case to get in touch.

During setup, I was surprised to find that Insync prompts me to select folders to sync, which is a red flag for me.

In 2021, 4 years ago, Google Drive’s selective sync feature was replaced with a system where all files are visible but stored online-only unless explicitly made available offline. This is a streaming model: files and folders appear in the Google Drive folder on your computer but are not fully downloaded unless you open or mark them for offline use. This means in GDrive, you no longer select specific folders in My Drive to sync fully by default.

Judging from the Insync forum, it’s been around since 2018, how come this feature has not been added, and I need to worry about selective syncing?

Hi @boardtc! Many thanks for giving Insync a try and for sharing your feedback here.

You are not required to select any files upon setup if you don’t want or need to-- all your files will be shown on the Insync app UI. It will only create local copies on your computer, in your chosen location, if you selectively sync them.

Let me know if you’d like to discuss this further given the above

Thanks Mia. Yes, I understand how selective sync works. Your comment does not address what I raised, though.

Apologies for not explicitly addressing your concern!

We have not included file-streaming since we focused on other projects these past few years which includes releasing 1-way sync, adding OneDrive and Dropbox support, updating our licensing model, and fixing major app bugs. We continue to focus on the last one, but I definitely hear you and how a streaming model could make your Insync workflow much more seamless. In fact, many others have also chimed in to express similar sentiments.

I would be happy to forward this feedback to our team to consider developing file-streaming as a core feature.

My trial ran out - I never tried it once I learned it was old school - my bad. Still looking for a solution as I am on 197GB and have no room. Maybe Insync is the solution but 7 days was too tight for me to get organised.

Perplexity still says: To seamlessly manage two Google Drive accounts with separate storage (e.g., each with 200GB) and access all files from both in one place on your desktop, the best software solution is Insync.

But in then gives a 6 year old video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8dtFqKCpIo

And this does not show anything seamless, both are separately managed via an icon at the top. Is the functionality still the same 6 years later?

Hi @boardtc ! Shoot me a message at support@insynchq.com using the same email address you used for the Insync trial. I’d be happy to extend it for you.

As for managing multiple accounts, the same function from that video remains: each account will have a dedicated Base Folder of your choice to keep things organized in your local computer.

I suspected it was the same alright and it’s just not the seamless solution I imagined and hoped for me. I spent equivalent and purchased 2TB for 1 year reluctantly. But I needed a solution this week. Hopefully I can figure out a solution before the renewal comes up again!! Thanks for your accommodating offer.

No problem at all. I appreciate that you took the time to share your feedback, what solution you had in mind, and ways we can improve moving forward. If there’s anything else you need, just post it here or send an email to support@insynchq.com!
